Create A Great First Impression By Following Best Practices With Interviewing
It's a good idea to create a positive impression from the outset, following some examples of best practices with interviewing.
Human nature being what it is, we tend to form impressions of others very quickly. Once set, these judgments can be very difficult to dispel.
While it's likely in any formal interview that you will be given a full opportunity to show your skills and expertise for the job you seek, you'll be at an immense advantage if your manner and behavior commend you to everyone you meet from the outset:
- dress appropriately for job that you are applying for
- be polite to all you meet: don't forget the receptionist or the person who directs you to your waiting area before the interview - they might be asked for their impression of you later
- while you are waiting to be interviewed, it's best to sit quietly and behave as if each person passing were your potential interviewer - they just might be!
- if you have to wait, avoid giving the impression of impatience or boredom; avoid using your cell phone if possible
- practice greeting your interviewer with a firm handshake and a smile
- remain standing until your interviewer asks you to be seated
Small or unexpected circumstances can have a major impact on the result of your interviews; so make it your strategy to deal with them as professionally as you can.
